Burn size: palm method (small or patchy burns)

Fluids & paediatrics

Count how many of the patient's own hands would cover the burned area. By convention the whole hand, palm and fingers, is 1% of body surface area. Count partial and full thickness burns only, not simple redness.

What you enter

  • Number of the patient's hand areas covering the burn (hands)
  • What you measured with: Whole hand, palm and fingers (1% by convention) / Palm only, without fingers (about 0.5%)
FORMULA%TBSA = number of hand areas x 1% (whole hand) or x 0.5% (palm only)
