Burns resuscitation: Parkland (and the current lower start)

Fluids & paediatrics

Classic: 4 mL/kg per % TBSA over 24 h, half in the first 8 h from the time of injury. Current American Burn Association guidance starts lower (2 mL/kg) and titrates to urine output, because Parkland over-resuscitates.

What you enter

  • Weight (kg or lb)
  • % TBSA burned (second-degree or deeper only) (%)
  • Starting formula: 2 mL/kg/% (ABA 2023 adult start) / 4 mL/kg/% (classic Parkland) / 3 mL/kg/% (paediatric start)
  • Hours since injury (h)
FORMULAVolume = rate (mL/kg/%) × weight × %TBSA over 24 h; half over the first 8 h from injury, half over the next 16 h
